Planning Meeting 2012

Saturday, January 21,  2012 9 am- 11 am Blackbird Coffee, Downtown Milledgeville

We will be discussing events for 2012 to get ready for a great growing season!

We will be selling tickets and promoting the garden at Kroger on Saturday, November 12 from 11- 4. We will need help selling tickets if you are able at any time on Saturday. Please email mvillegarden if you are able to help.

1. Tabling at Southside Piggly Wiggly
We will be promoting the garden, our upcoming workday and the Local Harvest Food Fair on at the southside Piggly Wiggly on Wed. 9/ 28 from 4:00- 7:00. We will need volunteers to come and help.

2. Workday at the Garden Oct. 1 8- 11ish
Please come help get the garden ready for winter. We will be planting the Children’s Garden, spreading mulch and general cleaning. Please bring garden tools, tillers, pitch forks, rakes, wheelbarrows, and weed eaters. Feel free to drop in and leave in time to attend the Local Harvest Food Fair.

3. "Local Harvest Food Fair"
Saturday, October 1st: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
in the parking lot between GMC and First Presbyterian Church (corner of Greene and Wayne Streets)

SAMPLE and purchase pasture-fed meat, artisan cheese and local/Georgia-grown seasonal produce!

Children and adults are invited to join Live Healthy Baldwin in celebrating Georgia Childhood Obesity Awareness Day at the Community Garden at New Beginning Worship Center located on the site of the former Southside Elementary School at 200 Southside Drive.

Activities for adults and children from 9:00 to noon include blood pressure screening, games, face painting and a Fun Walk from 10:00 to 11:00. Those who complete the walk, will have a chance to have their name drawn for prizes. Healthy snacks will be provided.

Volunteers are also needed to help spruce up the garden starting at 9:00. This is open to any and all interested volunteers and if you can bring along shovels, rakes, hoes, pitchforks, weed eaters and wheel barrows to help, that would be appreciated but not required. Learn how to preserve fresh fruits and vegetables using various techniques including freezing and canning. This workshop is intended for beginner or experienced "canners" and is taught by avid farmer and MCGA board member, Dr. Julia Metzker, Georgia College professor of chemistry. 2.Q&A/Book Signing event featuring Camille Kingsolver,

As part of a year-long focus on sustainable living, health and wellness at Georgia College, the public is invited to a Q&A/Book Signing event featuring Camille Kingsolver, who contributed to her mother Barbara Kingsolver’s highly acclaimed best seller, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life. The event will take place on Friday, August 12th, from 10:45 to 12:15 at Georgia College’s Campus Theatre located at 137 W. Hancock Street in downtown Milledgeville.

In addition to this wonderful opportunity to meet Kingsolver in the award-winning, recently renovated theatre, the public will have a chance to see displays and talk with representatives from various local businesses and organizations that are involved in these issues including Live Healthy Baldwin; the Milledgeville Community Garden Association; Sparta-Hancock Growers Association CSA (Community Supported Agriculture program which provides weekly shares of fresh produce and eggs to the public); Elm Street Gardens, a "no-till" organic garden operation that supports the CSA; Georgia Organics; Salamander Springs Farm, which practices "Permaculture" and Crooked Pines Farm, which offers groups and individuals an opportunity to experience fun family farm life.

Kingsolver will be in town as the featured speaker for the GC Freshmen Convocation friday evening and to meet with incoming freshmen who have read the book over the summer. Fans of the book are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity for the public to meet with Camille Kingsolver, and meet and mingle with other members of the community interested in the local food movement. Copies of the book are available for purchase at the bookstore located in the theatre complex.

Free parking is available on the street or in nearby parking lots between the Mary Vinson Library and the City Hall Annex, next to the Catholic Church on Jefferson St., behind BB&T on Green St and on Hancock St. at the site of the farmers’ market. The parking deck on McIntosh St. behind the theatre may also be available but charges a fee. If you have questions regarding the event, call 414-6433.
